Blagaj is an excellent choice for a day trip in Herzegovina. The main sights around the Buna spring and the Tekke can be enjoyed at an easy pace, while visitors who want a longer walk can add the climb to Blagaj Old Town, also known as Stjepan-grad.
Why visit Blagaj
Blagaj combines a powerful karst spring, Ottoman architecture, a clear river, stone riverbanks and several layers of history. It is best enjoyed slowly: walk beside the Buna, explore the area around the Tekke, and leave time for coffee or lunch by the water.
The historic urban area of Blagaj, the Tekke on the Buna and Blagaj Old Town are listed as National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The source of the Buna River
The Buna emerges from a large karst cave beneath a high cliff. A short riverside approach leads to the best-known view of the spring and the Tekke. Water levels, flow and conditions beside the river vary with weather and season, so take care on wet or slippery surfaces.
Blagaj Tekke
The Tekke stands directly beside the cliff and the Buna spring and forms part of a protected natural and architectural ensemble. It is a religious and cultural-historic place, so visitors should behave quietly and follow the current rules for clothing and photography.
Check opening hours, admission and access to the interior shortly before arrival. Do not rely on old photographs of prices or opening times.
Riverside walk, food and coffee
The riverfront has walking passages, places to rest and restaurants. Instead of naming one venue that may quickly become outdated, use the Google Maps section to check current restaurants, ratings, opening hours and distance from parking.
Blagaj is a pleasant place for a meal by the water. Trout and other Herzegovinian dishes are often available, but always check the current menu and prices at the restaurant you choose.
Blagaj Old Town — Stjepan-grad
The old fortified town stands on the hill above Blagaj. It is associated with the medieval Kosača noble family and is commonly called Stjepan-grad in tourism materials.
The climb is much more demanding than the walk around the spring. Attempt it only with suitable footwear, enough water and favourable weather. In summer, avoid the hottest part of the day. If you prefer not to climb, spend the whole visit beside the Buna and in old Blagaj.
Practical tips
- Allow around 3–4 hours for the spring, Tekke and a relaxed break.
- Add at least 2 more hours if you plan to visit Stjepan-grad.
- Wear non-slip footwear; carry water and sun protection for the climb.
- Check the forecast, opening hours and prices shortly before travelling.
- Respect the Tekke as an active religious and cultural place.
- At weekends and in high season, arrive early for easier parking.
